Restored Timber and Recycled Building Materials for Merricks Barn

Lara Knight – 12 December, 2018

This visually beautiful barn in rural Victoria was built by Gunn Building Projects with recycled timbers from Jaks. And it’s first job was a wedding!

Owners, Andrea and Michael, love the atmosphere of country properties and used part of the original shed as a feature wall in their house. When they rebuilt the barn, it was designed to work with other buildings in the area and fit gently back into the landscape.

Andrea says they originally wanted a solid timber barn but found the mix of old wood and steel was a great way to highlight the timber. Jaks supplied recycled heroes like rough sawn oregon cladding, spotted gum decking, truss collar timbers and feature posts. Doors and internal corrugated iron cladding are also secondhand. The giant ledge brace doors were custom built to tie back to a traditional, practical shed design.

The property has cattle, horses and bees so the barn is a mixed purpose outbuilding for storage and entertaining. (I’d love a peek at wedding photos with those big doors wide open and all the gorgeously textured backgrounds!)

Andrea says the choice to use reclaimed timber was easy. They use recycled materials as much as possible to save the environment, and they wanted a rustic look. “It looks worn already and we love a worn look. We didn’t have to wait for months for it to look the way we wanted.”
