This attractive industrial furniture gallery, under 2 hours from Sydney, is a great drop-in spot if you’re in the Hunter region and has an online store to browse if you’re further away.
Industrial vintage is a personal favourite and I love businesses that turn factory finds and old machinery into useful furniture.
Century Salvage is a new venture for long-time mates and furniture makers Darren Casey and Cameron Murray. The pair met 30 years ago and share an interest in practical repurposing that fuelled many co-projects before pooling their talents in this atmospheric vintage store.
Darren’s interest in old materials led to antique restorations, French polishing and recycled timber furniture. Cameron grew up in rural Scotland where repurposing is a way of life. Both were keen to explore Australian industrial furniture and bring their passion for patina and history to sustainable decorator pieces.
Century Salvage opened in 2015 and specialises in sculptural lighting; industrial shelving and storage; vintage steel and timber coffee or dining tables; rural bric-a-brac; and contemporary wall art. Old surfaces are preserved with glass tops, lacquer or hand polishing, and the guys subtly adapt each piece for 21st century use.
Century Salvage recently moved from Wollombi to the old pioneering village of Laguna (10km south) and is fitting out another beautiful old barn in the GNTP precinct. The Great Northern Trading Post offers a wonderful village atmosphere of seasonal food, coffee, wine, music and local creativity so make sure you take time out of your Hunter tour, or Central Coast/Newcastle day trip, to check it out.
