A community-based environmental charity that has been promoting reuse and repair for almost 20 years. The Bower is a unique combination of op shop, online store, salvage yard, repair workshop and education centre.
The Bower Reuse & Repair Centre has always practised what it preaches. Its buildings incorporate straw bales, recycled building materials, solar panels, rain water tanks and secondhand furniture. Waste is recycled. Transport and energy use are carefully monitored. And dedicated community involvement keeps the whole project running.
Today The Bower operates two Sydney shopfronts for secondhand furniture, household goods, appliances, recycled building materials, bikes and reusable bits and pieces. They also offer a collection and rehoming service, and regular DIY workshops, to keep good quality items out of landfill. Learn how to paint and repair old favourites. Or donate goods for others to reuse and repurpose.
Customers can also bring broken appliances and wobbly furniture to the popular Bower repair cafes. Electrical, furniture and bicycle repairers operate at The Bower in Marrickville every Wednesday 1pm – 4pm; at Parramatta on the last Saturday of each month from 10am – 12pm; and at various ‘on the road’ locations.
From its inception in 1998 The Bower has been a real-world test of sustainable business practices and forward thinking. Today they aim to reach even more people by selling secondhand and refurbished items online. Browse everything from collectable china to vintage tools, vinyl, books, appliances, electronics and hardware.
The Bower is about passionate people, a caring community, and an easy way to share resources. If you’re looking for affordable secondhand furniture, and creative upcycling materials, visit The Bower Reuse & Repair Centre and add your support.
